A Commitment to Local Youth

Athleticism runs deep in the Spiering family—starting with Scott’s uncle, Harold Smallwood, a 1936 Olympic runner, and continuing with the Spiering children who’ve already participated in their first Junior Olympic Championship. Also passed down through the generations is a strong desire for public service. Ryn remembers learning the importance of giving back to the community from her grandmother who had an impressive volunteer resume of her own and funded several scholarships for the local youth. Together, Ryn and Scott have worked hard to preserve and pass down these family traits to their children, often by combining their love of sports and charitable giving in the activities they support.

The Spiering's most recent tribute to their family legacy is the Spiering Family Foundation. A nonprofit charitable organization, its mission is to assist athletically and scholastically promising youth in achieving higher education through various nondiscriminatory scholarship programs. The foundation is directed by a board of well-respected community leaders and athletes like Steve Scott and Scott Karl. Founded in January 2007, the foundation has already awarded several scholarships and hopes to expand upon these accomplishments in the years to come.

Additionally, the Spiering family is a big supporter of their local school and athletic programs. Either through a direct contribution or the support of Scott's company, Anchor Bay Capital, Inc., the Spiering family sponsors several youth athletic events in Carlsbad, including baseball and football. They have also made several donations to Poinsettia Elementary to help buy much needed supplies and continue to support the school through active participation and volunteering.
